Xiaomi Redmi 13C 5G Review: Affordable 5G Performance and Style

You are currently viewing Xiaomi Redmi 13C 5G Review: Affordable 5G Performance and Style

In a year marked by rising tech prices, Xiaomi has introduced the Redmi 13C 5G, a budget-friendly 5G smartphone starting at just Rs 10,999 (for the 4GB + 128GB variant). Surprisingly, it even outperformed the Apple iPhone 14 Plus (worth Rs 79,900) in 5G speed tests in select locations. The Redmi 13C 5G also offers up to 256GB of inbuilt storage, a rare feature in its segment that proves beneficial in the long run.

However, apart from 5G support and higher storage capacity, the Redmi 13C 5G is a relatively basic device. It features a 50MP primary camera, a 6.74-inch HD+ display with a waterdrop-style notch, and 18W charging support (with only a 10W charger included in the box). Is the Redmi 13C 5G worth considering for those who don’t prioritize super-fast internet speed? Here’s our comprehensive Xiaomi Redmi 13C 5G Review after using the device for a few days.

Design and Build Quality

Redmi 13C 5G

The Redmi 13C 5G shares design similarities with the Redmi 12 5G, featuring a flat-edge design and large camera cutouts on the back. The front differs with its waterdrop-style notch and thick bezels, which feel outdated as we approach 2024. The plastic frame, however, feels solid, and the back has a nice glass-like finish.

Redmi 13C 5G

We reviewed the Startail Green variant, but the Redmi 13C 5G also comes in Startail Black and Silver. While the shimmery accents on the back might not appeal to everyone, some users may appreciate the flamboyant design. The device’s large 6.74-inch display makes it larger than the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, and maintenance can be challenging as the box does not include a protective case.

Standard ports and buttons, including a 3.5mm headphone jack, are present, but there’s no infrared transmitter, a feature previously cherished in Redmi smartphones. The side-mounted physical fingerprint scanner’s performance can be inconsistent, often missing more than it hits.

Display

Redmi 13C 5G

The Redmi 13C 5G’s 6.74-inch display is excellent for reading messages, browsing social media, and other basic tasks. While its HD+ resolution (1,600 x 720 pixels) with a 90Hz refresh rate may suffice for entry-level users, those upgrading from older devices might find the lack of a full HD display disappointing.

Testing the LCD display with YouTube and Netflix showed that while YouTube videos looked crisp at high resolution, Netflix playback required optimization. The shadows and black spots were not as deep as those on an AMOLED panel, and the overall viewing experience was average, especially since the Redmi 13C 5G does not offer stereo speakers.

Performance

Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC, the Redmi 13C 5G offers decent performance. The base variant includes 4GB RAM and 128GB storage, while the top variant, which we reviewed, offers 8GB RAM and 256GB storage (Rs 14,499). The UFS 2.1 storage technology used aligns with the maximum supported storage type by the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC.

In Geekbench 6’s single-core and multi-core tests, the Redmi 13C 5G scored 698 and 1903 points, respectively, outperforming the MediaTek G85-powered Redmi 12C. Its AnTuTu scores were also decent, though the Realme 11X 5G with the same chipset performed better in benchmarks.

The Redmi 13C 5G’s key focus is bringing 5G connectivity to the masses. Testing 5G speeds with an Airtel 5G Plus connection, the performance was impressive, with speeds often exceeding 200Mbps, outperforming my home Wi-Fi in many instances. However, performance can vary based on coverage.

Overall, the MediaTek Dimensity 6100+ SoC provides modest processing power, with occasional stutters and lags, especially when switching apps or running Google Assistant. The Redmi 13C runs on Android 13-based MIUI 14, and the Android 14 update may take a while to arrive. The pre-installed apps clutter the software experience.

Camera

Redmi 13C 5G

The camera system on the Redmi 13C 5G is where compromises are evident. The rear camera system lacks an ultra-wide camera, a common feature in this range. It includes a 50MP primary camera and a 2MP depth sensor, while the front has a 5MP AI selfie camera.

By default, the camera prioritizes high saturation, making pictures and videos appear with a warm hue. Most images lack sharpness and contain noticeable noise. Enabling night mode under bright conditions can make images appear sharper, but stability is an issue. At night, the camera performance declines further, with colors becoming muted and noise increasing. The selfie camera also struggles to detect skin tone accurately in various lighting conditions.

Battery Life and Charging

The Redmi 13C 5G packs a 5,000mAh battery with up to 18W charging support. In real-life usage and stress tests, the battery backup per charge is impressive. Even with a 5G SIM, high refresh rate enabled, and 80 percent brightness, the device easily lasts a full day.

Using the bundled 10W charger, the Redmi 13C 5G reaches approximately 20 percent charge in 30 minutes, with a full charge taking over two hours.

Software and Features

The Redmi 13C 5G runs on Android 13-based MIUI 14, which offers a range of features and customizations. However, the software experience can be cluttered due to the numerous pre-installed apps. Users might need to spend some time removing or disabling unwanted apps to streamline the experience.

Price and Value

Priced at Rs 10,999 for the base variant and Rs 14,499 for the top variant, the Redmi 13C 5G offers a balanced mix of performance, battery life, and 5G connectivity. However, considering the compromises in camera quality and display resolution, users might want to explore alternatives like the Redmi 12 5G or Realme 11X 5G for better overall performance and value.

Verdict

The Redmi 13C 5G aims to bring 5G to a budget-friendly segment, making it accessible to a broader audience. While it excels in providing solid build quality, long battery life, and reliable 5G speeds, there are noticeable compromises in camera performance and charging speeds. For users on a tight budget, the Redmi 13C 5G is a worthy contender, but those willing to spend a bit more might find better value in the Redmi 12 5G or Realme 11X 5G.
