Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Review: Unleashing an Unstoppable AI Revolution

AI features of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra take front stage, and some of them are really helpful. Remove those, and you’re left with a high-end flagship smartphone that performs admirably in nearly every area—cameras, battery life, and performance—while looking like an incremental upgrade. Professionals, creative people, and power users in general should find it to be a powerful tool with the S Pen and other productivity features. All provided they can understand the cost.

Details of AI

Numerous AI features dispersed over many jobs and functions are grouped under the general term Galaxy AI. In brief:

All it takes to start a visual search for anything you see on the phone’s screen is to long press the home button or navigation bar and then circle the item. Like Google Lens, but faster and simpler.

When enabled, the Galaxy AI on the S24 Ultra provides live language translation on calls, delivering an AI voice prompt in the selected language to the other party. If the other person is in front of you, the interpreter function offers both parties instantaneous voice translation for whatever they say. Though not flawless, the translation occasionally produces literal translations, it is functional and helpful when needed. Change the tone of your writing and translations in messaging apps are two more language and text-related AI features.

Next, the AI goodies in the Samsung Notes app let you to automatically format, summarize, arrange, and create covers for your notes. Along with translating, the Voice Recorder app now has some AI capabilities and can also handle transcriptions of recordings, which is a useful function for us journalists.

Gorgeous 6.8-inch Dynamic LTPO AMOLED display up front supports HDR10+ and has a refresh rate of 120Hz. There’s a new anti-glare coating, plus a layer of Gorilla Armor (the best and newest Corning has to offer as of right now) to prevent scratches, and the peak brightness goes up to 2,600 nits, so strong sunlight poses no issues in terms of screen eligibility. As usual, one has very high expectations from a Samsung AMOLED display, and the S24 Ultra’s screen lives up to them.

Camera

The 200MP main camera, 10MP 3x telephoto, and 12MP ultrawide cameras on the Galaxy S24 Ultra are essentially the same as those on its predecessor. You get higher resolution here at the expense of zoom levels, as a 50MP 5x camera has taken the place of the 10MP 10x telephoto from last year.. Long range zoom shots are where the S24 Ultra really shines. Even though 100x photos can still have a water painting effect, they still outperform similar ones taken by competitors with hyper zoom. Remarkable is the native support of the S24 Ultra’s cameras by apps like Instagram and Snapchat, which lets you use the features when you post on these social media sites.

Notable is the AI-enabled ability to see regular videos in slow motion. The Gallery app allows one to long-press a video to see it in slow motion. If the footage looks good, one can edit and save the video as a slow-mo video as well, with generative AI filling in the missing frames.

Software and S Pens

The software side is Android 14 with One UI 6.1 and a tonne of preloaded apps from Google, Microsoft, and, of course, Samsung. One of the main advantages only a Samsung flagship can offer, in my opinion, is the ecosystem of apps and services that Samsung offers. Everything from Samsung Notes to Cloud, the features connected to the Samsung account (online backup and restore, Find your phone, etc.), Secure Folder, Samsung Pass, Samsung Wallet, and a tonne more are all really helpful to have. Not to mention DeX, the capability that lets you get a desktop-like environment most suitable for serious work by wirelessly or over HDMI connecting your phone to a big screen.

Performance

How can performance be a problem with the newest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 from Qualcomm? Lightweight or heavy chores are handled with the greatest ease by the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. There are no jitters or lags in the very smooth user experience. Naturally, it can also manage games rather well, but I doubt anyone would buy the S24 Ultra just for gaming purposes. While there is some throttling seen in the CPU Throttle test, that doesn’t appear in normal use and the phone maintains its cool when driven hard and used heavily. The smartphone scores highly on most benchmarks.

Battery

The 5,000mAh battery on the device doesn’t let you down either; it lasts a good amount of time for medium-to-heavy usage. As is typical, that statement is qualified by the fact that mileage may vary and that you may require a top-up charge in the evening if you use battery-draining features like hotspot, 4K video recording, heavy gaming, etc. You are literally left to your own devices because Samsung does not include a charger in the box and the charging speeds are limited to 45W. In little more than two hours, I was able to completely charge the gadget. Fitting for a high-end flagship, wireless charging (15W) and reverse wireless charging (4.5W) are also planned.

Conclusion

The usefulness of the AI features on the Galaxy S24 Ultra is another matter entirely. Those, I think, are significant. Initially, I believed that the majority of the AI features seemed to be productivity-focused, which might not be to everyone’s taste.
